Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are small metal posts that Dr. Freeman inserts into the empty sockets where your permanent teeth used to be. The implants integrate with your natural bone, providing a foundation for crowns or implant-supported dentures.

To ensure safe, consistent, and aesthetically pleasing results, Dr. Freeman places dental implants with the X-Guide™ Navigation System. X-Guide Navigation uses three-dimensional imaging technology and real-time guidance to help Dr. Freeman to increase placement accuracy.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants offer various benefits, including:

  • Improved oral hygiene
  • Clearer speech
  • Easier biting and chewing
  • Confidence
  • Durability

Dental implants are also convenient. Instead of soaking them in a cleaning solution like dentures, you brush and floss them like your natural teeth.

Who is a candidate for dental implants?

If you want dental implants, you need enough bone volume in your jaw and/or upper palate to support them. If you have low bone volume, Dr. Freeman might recommend a prerequisite treatment, like a bone graft, before moving forward.

What does getting dental implants involve?

Getting traditional dental implants takes at least three visits.

First dental implants visit

If Dr. Freeman determines that you can benefit from dental implants, he numbs your mouth with a local anesthetic and inserts a series of titanium posts into your empty tooth sockets.

After the procedure, your mouth heals for several months while the implants fuse with your lower jaw or upper palate.

Second dental implants visit

When the implants finish integrating with your bone, you return to Dr. Freeman’s office. Dr. Freeman takes digital impressions of your mouth and sends them to a dental lab. Techs at the lab use your impressions to design and manufacture custom dental restorations that fit perfectly.

Third dental implants visit

When your custom restorations are ready, you visit Dr. Freeman for the last time. Dr. Freeman attaches the restorations to your implants, polishes your teeth, and provides care instructions.

How do I care for my dental implants?

Caring for your dental implants is easy. Dr. Freeman recommends brushing and flossing twice daily, visiting the office every six months for professional teeth cleaning, and wearing a mouthguard to protect your implants from damage if you play sports.
