Wrinkles Hide Our Emotions

June 24, 2013, Dallas, TX- Gravity can take its toll on the face, and it turns out that wrinkles not only make us look old but they also conceal our emotions, making it more difficult for people to read expressions, and sometimes misinterpreting them as unhappy or angry, a new study shows.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania showed participants 64 photographs of people and asked them to rate those faces based on the emotions being conveyed. According to researchers, the people in the study rated the faces of older people as more sad or angry even though their expressions were actually neutral.

Lead researcher and doctoral student in social psychology and University of Pennsylvania, Carlos Garrido explained to LiveScience that wrinkles can make the mouth droop, and causes deep creases to form between the eyebrows and on the forehead, something people could misinterpret as anger or sadness.

It may be a generational thing. A 2012 study appearing in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, showed that young people rated the faces of their peers as expressing anger and happiness more intensely than older faces. On the other hand, younger people stated that older faces expressed sadness more intensely and their faces sometimes expressed mixed emotions, despite the fact that younger and older people featured in the photographs had the same expression.

The fact that those deep lines and creases around the mouth, eyes, and across the forehead that form as we age can not only make us look older, but can also make it impossible to read our emotions may give further impetus to older men and women. A facelift also eliminates jowls which are actually fatty deposits that form along the jawline due to the force of gravity.

With age a persons forehead can appear to be locked into a permanent scowl that alone can add years to a persons face. If you are not ready for a facelift, a brow lift can effectively eliminate those deep furrows on the brow and take years away from the face.

Chin lifts and cheek augmentations can also help a person combat the signs of age. A chin lift can remove the double chin and give the jawline more definition. A cheek augmentation can give added fullness so the face no longer looks hollowed out.
